Layla Smith (Gyokujun Teishin, “Pure Forge, Pervading Heart”) began studying Buddhism in 1969 at San Francisco Zen Center with Shunryu Suzuki-roshi. Ordained as a priest in 1973, she spent a total of 18 years in residence at Zen Center’s three practice places--the City Center, Green Gulch Farm, and Tassajara Zen Mountain Center, and has received Dharma Transmission in the Suzuki-roshi lineage of Soto Zen.

Layla has been teaching and leading meditation retreats since 1983. In addition to the Larkspur group, she also travels regularly to Montana to teach, primarily at Open Circle Sangha in Helena, Montana.
